Cleithrophobia

The fear of being locked in an enclosed place.

Jakob's got it.

I think it started with kindergarten recess, where the door automatically locks behind them when they go outside to play. And now the fear has spread to his bedroom door. My kids have always slept with the door shut (note: not locked, just closed), in the dark. But lately...

"Mom, will you please leave the door open and the light on? I don't want to get locked in my room. The door gets locked and it sticks together like this" (clapping hands together and pushing them against each other).

Poor kid.

hey! Know what? I had that as a kid.

I used to be so afraid of the house catching fire or something and me not being able to get out of my room due to the door being locked. Not because I locked it... but because it would just HAPPEN (note, this never happened... it wa an irrational fear).

I always required my door to be WIDE open. Then as I got older (read teenager) I slowly was able to close my door more and more each night. Now, now more fear of a locked door... other fears took it's place :)

Oh, kids and their phobias. It's exhausting to keep up with a kid with a phobia. Seriously. It's driving me batty. (I should get my thyroid checked. That's probably why I'm still shedding like a banshee.)

I have empathy for him, because I am totally clausterphobic, which is probably a similar feeling. Poor kid!

Thanks so much for the comfort and understanding. I really am just fine and need to just buck up. Thanks for making me laugh with your posts.

Poor Jakob-this kindergarten thing is really a big ordeal. I am dreading it next year with Austin. I am starting to become a big fan of Home Schooling, but I am crazy enough as a work outside of the home mommy-can you even imagine if I home schooled? Yikes! I would need and intervention.

oh, poor kid... he was so cute waving at me yesterday when I stopped off at Arin's house! Tell him it's ok..I'm still scared of the dark and heights... but I never was scared of heights til I had kids!

I used to want to keep the door open when I slept, but then I realized that if it was open than the monsters could get in and that scared me more than being locked in my room, and I have slept with the door shut ever since...
