4 freaking 30 a.m.

The cry. The squint at the clock.

Really? Really? You've been sleeping through the night lately, yet tonight you already got up at 1 a.m. Ugh. Maybe if I just lie here she'll go back to sleep.

Crap. I hope she doesn't wake Troy up. He's probably asleep on the floor by the door instead of his big boy bed. Should I get a bottle or a pacifier? Bottle, pacifier... Hm. If I knew where her pacifiers were.... I think there are two downstairs. Do I want to go downstairs? Ugh.

*Sigh* Okay, she's not falling back asleep. Maybe I'll just get the bottle. I'm so glad I clear a path to the kitchen every night. Oh yeah, I put a new fridge lock on the fridge. Okay, turn the head so as not to get blinded by the bright bright fridge light. Nope, not that, not that either...got it!

Should I heat it up? Yeah, I'll be nice. Okay, turn the head away from the microwave light, and...where's the start button? Hm, the microwave light is kind of pleasant compared to the fridge light.

Alright, let's put the lid back on and---*gasp*! Are you kidding me? My 4:30 coordination just knocked over the bottle? UGH! Kill me now! Alrighty. Just what I wanted to do while half asleep, clean up milk and make a new bottle. Now I have to measure it out and stuff. Sheesh.

Okay, Ivy, I'm coming. How's your diaper? Eh, it'll hold till morning. Well, the real morning when I'm slightly more coherent, anyway. And off to the rocking chair.

Dude, for real? You're going to fall asleep before even drinking anything? WHY didn't I go for the pacifier instead? No way am I going to waste my efforts on you sleeping. Maybe if I shake the bottle a bit in your mouth. A bit more. Okay, and time for me to tilt my head a little... Dude, it's been 15 minutes, how much have you had? An ounce? That's it? Dude, I'm going back to bed.

Let's put you down slowly, slowly...aw, man, the blanket fell over your face! Please stay asleep, please stay asleep...And, blanket removed successfully. And, turn the head from the fridge light. And back to bed.

Wait, do I have to pee? Should I go now or just wait till morning? No way am I turning on the bathroom light. I hope I don't wake Pete up when I flush. Is that Ivy again? Are you kidding me? You are so crying it out if you wake up completely. Just...don't wake up completely. Sleep is good. Sleep me likey.

So why am I not sleeping again? I'm so tired, why am I lying here awake? Come on, body! Crash, baby, crash! Squint at the clock...5:15. Pete will be getting up any second, and then his shower will keep me up. Grr. And he's up. His shower starts, and now the bed is 10 degrees cooler because he got out of it. Must. Get. Warm. Must...get...*snore*.

If it makes you feel any better at all, I was up too, and at least Ivy has been sleeping through the night most of the time, I am typically up at 1 and 4 and sometimes again at 5, but one positive to breastfeeding, I never have to leave my bedroom. It just makes me mad when she doesn't go right back to sleep after eating and I have to walk her around, I have gotten pretty good at sleep walking I think.

Goodness that was funny. Only because I could've written that...only a lot less eloquently. (Seriously, there should be spell checker on comments. Dang it!)
Only I always went pee when I was awake because I was NOT getting up again when there was no child screaming. And I would just wait and flush in the morning. Ew, I know...but you just do whatcha gotta do.

I'll be honest, that's one thing I'm not looking forward to when I have kids. Glad I still have a few years on that one! But, you ROCK, Nat, seriously...you deserve a day off or something.

Oh, Nat. I'm so sorry. This is why I refuse to "add two feedings to the middle of the night." I seriously can't do it. I start to get pretty angry when sleep-deprived.

You are such a funny writer! I can so remember those days---especially with Alexis since she didn't sleep through the night until she was 3 1/2 years old. It won't last thank heavens!

This is "the other Petersen" mamma in the neighborhood. I hope you don't mind that I lurked your blog from Zoe's links. I love to read it. Your tongue in cheek posts about motherhood have saved me more than once. This one is particuarly funny. I haven't experienced the sleep through the night thing yet, but I have gone through almost that exact routine. I haven't been brave enough to blog about it yet, but one night I was not awake enough and I actually dropped Rider-luckily on the boppy pillow, which he just started sucking as if he were eating. He didn't seem to mind that his crazy mamma had just put his life in danger.

You are such a fun writer, that's the only reason I don't fall asleep while reading your blog. Otherwise I feel all day like you did at 4 am I'm a sleep walking mamama!

You must be reading my mind. K is two and I still have nights like that 2-3 times a week! Someday she'll sleep and so will I. And I look foward to it so much!

You are so great at giving such an accurate description of how it is in the middle of the night-you make me laugh!!! What we do for our kids!

It is so nice to know other people are going through it too! Not that I am happy you are not sleeping, but at 4:30 this morning I was feeding Jack, got him to sleep and then he pooped. I changed him, put him back to sleep and he pooped again! The joys of motherhood!
