Open Mouth...

After reading this post, it got me thinking, have I ever said something that offended anyone, or that made me feel like a complete idiot?

Uh, yeah. Totally.

When Pete and I were first married, my cute sister-in-law and brother-in-law were purchasing their first home. They were in the midst of re-painting and cleaning and all that jazz. They were kind of mocking the colors the previous owners had picked out for rooms. So I decided to join in, saying, "Yeah, so they had bright red in one room, and some kind of celery green color in the other?" And they replied, "Um, the green is what we just painted today."

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I tried to play it off, like, "Yeah, I was just noticing all the different colors, it's so nice to not have everything be white..." or whatever I said around the foot that was now in my mouth. I hope they weren't offended, and if they were they just played it off. I really didn't think the green was bad; in fact I really like it, and half of my house has different shades of green in it. I was just trying to fit in to my new family, you know, building relationships, joining in the fun... Um, still feel dumb, six years later, typing about it.

So, have you ever said something so totally mortifying, or had someone say something like that to you? If so, I'd love to hear it! (This is the part where you hit the "comment" link below this post.) And if you're way embarrassed to share, share it anyway- just leave the comment as anonymous.

I used to run birthday parties at a kids gym that I worked at and one day this older grey haired man was bringing in a 4 or 5 year old and I said, "Grandpa can you have him take his shoes off before he goes into the gym?" And he was like, "I am his dad" I guess what goes around comes around.

I always stick my foot in my mouth because I'm supposed to wear hearing aids and I always hear things wrong and it just spirals from there. Most people think I just ignore them or I'm stupid... I just don't hear things the same way others do... A comment about a bat could come across about a hat to me... Yeah... this is my life on a daily basis! Totally makes me smile!

I thought of another one. When I first started work at a bank, a guy came in to pull money out of an account. I asked to see his ID, and said, "I want to make sure you're allowed to get money out for your wife." His name was Stacy. I think I really made him mad with my assumption that his account was a girl's.

So Nat- I totally don't remember that at all if it makes you feel any better. So you can stop feeling dumb about it. I have had my fair share of those moments too. Like one Sunday when a neighbor of mine came to church. She had been really inactive so I wanted to let her know that some one knew who she was and noticed that she came. Then I called her the wrong name! Yeah- welcome back! She just smiled, but it has been a while since I saw her... DOH!

We moved back to ID. from UT a yr ago and last month I had a baby. A week later I headed up to scout camp. Some girls there acted like they knew me and I thought I knew the one girl and said "I was just remembering the summer we went to your parents house, the other day" she said No, you've never been there...turns out it was a totally different girl. That's ok they both asked when I was due LOL

I had a table with 3 kids on it, 2 a little bit older and one was a toddler. well i asked if they wanted to get HER anything to drink. turns out HER was a HIM. the mom quickly corrected me and i just kept talking like i didn't realize i had made the mistake in the first place. you can't really apologize for that... i felt so stupid!

Oh yes, I'd have to say the "That would be gay" comment that I made while TALKING TO MY FRIEND, WHO IS GAY. I still giggle about that, because there was just no recovering from that comment! I'm lucky she didn't take it wrong. :)
