Reading Rainbow

Well, it's official: Jakob is reading! At school they take turns bringing different books home to read, and he just finished his third or so set. One of the sets of books had a really funny story in it, called "Jam and Ham". It's about a cat named Al that eats jam and ham, and then gets really fat. Then Al is sad that he's fat, so he runs a lot on a treadmill and gets thin again, and then he's happy. Jakob and I both thought it was hilarious.

Jakob loves that he can read, and he tries to sound words out to write as well. For instance, he tried writing my name, and wrote "Nadle" (for Natalie), which actually I thought was pretty good. He also tried to write "funk", and I don't think I need to tell you what he actually ended up writing.

Here's a video of him reading to Brock. Sorry it's kind of quiet-I should have stood closer to him.

Hey, it's Stacy from high school. I've been reading your blog for awhile since Jake found your sister's through facebook. I love reading blogs of people I know.
It's so exciting to see kids read. A few years ago my oldest, Evelyn, put the fridge magnets on the fridge-
WZ HPN DUD
(What's happening Dude?) It was so funny because she was just learning to sound out words.

So, dude. I wrote a really cute comment, and it didn't work and somehow got deleted! Grrrr. And the comment was kind of long. Recap: Jake is smart. That Title One stuff was such a joke. I always knew he was extremely, extremely smart.

I am glad they have upgraded from "Mat the Rat" books. I always feel like I am going to pull my hair out as my kids learn to read, they go soooo slow and sound everything out. I love when they finally get it, it is liberating! (for them and me.)

It is so nice when they finally grasp this concept!
By the way...you kitchen looks, or should I say looked, awesome! I love clean kitchens. It doesn't ever seem to last long enough.

Congrats! It is so much fun to have a reader in the family! I have a sudden urge to start sending my favorite books to your house...I will try to resist but there are few things I like better than sharing my literary obsessions with young readers. I have a Canadian picture book about a giant Fart that takes over a home that I might have to send your way....Kids books are so much fun!
